Instagram is testing an AI tool to scan the face and identify age.
Instagram is testing a new way to verify the age of its users using this AI tool developed by a third party company, Yoti, and you must be at least 13 years old to register for an Instagram account. But the company's failure to enforce this rule has caused a number of problems. It was not until 2019 that they even managed to get the birthdays of new users to join them. As privacy and child protection experts continue to address these issues, Instagram has introduced ways to separate young users from older users.
Social Vouching was introduced as the first method. Here, Instagram asks you to confirm the age of three friends you know. All three must be over 18 years of age and will be given three days to respond to this request. The second method uses AI technology where you have to send your video selfie to the company, which is being tested by a third party, Yoti.
Yoti is a well-known aging and identity card verification company whose technology is approved for use by the UK government and German regulators. This method is a very complex process. Various facial expressions are used to estimate age. According to a 2020 study, it is 98.89 percent accurate in predicting whether people over the age of 18 are over or under the age of 25.
This is not the only AI tool used by Instagram to track the age of its users. From 2019, it will use another automated system to search for younger users. This system collects information such as users' birthday posts and the ages of their friend groups.
For example, if a user claims to be 20 years old but their 17th birthday is announced, their account will be marked and they will be required to verify their age.
Instagram says it is working to add a new database to the system and is even testing a new language analysis tool to determine if the user is an adult or a teenager.
